Nach Wochen der Reise durch ländliche Gegenden mit Aufenthalten in Städtchen von der Grösse eines schweizerischen Bergdorfs war ich direkt ein wenig erleichtert darüber endlich wieder einmal in einer ausgewachsenen Stadt angekommen zu sein. Zurück in Auckland bieb mir noch ein letzter Tag in Neuseeland bevor mich das fliegende Känguru nach Sydney bringen sollte. Neue Perspektiven waren ein Ziel meiner Auszeit und in diesem Sinne habe ich mich dann zum Abschluss noch vom Sky Lift auf das Sky Deck des Sky Towers rauffahren lassen. Die Aussicht auf 220 Meter ist spektakulär und erlaubt tatsächlich eine neue Sicht auf die Welt. Einige Bilder davon sind wie üblich in der Gallery zu finden (Auckland – Sky Tower).

After weeks of traveling through rural landscapes with stops in towns the size of a Swiss mountain village I felt quite a bit relieved  to have finally arrived in a grown up city again. Back in Auckland I had left on last day in New Zealand before the flying Kangaroo would take me to Sydney. To get new perspectives has been one goal of my time-out and in this spirit I took the Sky Lift to the Sky Deck of the Sky Tower. The views at 220 meters are truly spectacular and indeed allow a new perspective to the world. Some pictures are as usual to be found in the Gallery (Auckland – Sky Tower).

Wow – die Dinger sind wirklich schnelllllll! Zum Abschluss meines Neuseeland-Aufenthalts habe ich mir noch eine Jetboot-Fahrt auf dem Waikato bei Taupo geleistet. So eine Fahrt wollte ich eigentlich schon in Queenstown machen aber dort hatte ich irgendwie keine Zeit (ist ein richtiger Stress, so ein Sabbatical… 😉 ). Die Boote werden durch einen Wasserstrahl angetrieben, haben kaum Tiefgang und sind extrem wendig. Damit lässt sich hervorragend auf Flüssen durch Schluchten rasen – immer möglichst nahe an den Felsen entlang damit Adrenalin-Schübe garantiert sind. Angeblich alles ganz ungefährlich obwohl ich wieder eines dieser langen Formulare unterschreiben musste inkl. Angabe eines Notfall-Konktakts… Ein paar Bilder der Fahrt habe ich in die Gallery gestellt.

Wow – they are really faaaaaaast!!!!!!! At the end of my New Zealand adventures I went on a jet boat tour on the Waikato River near Taupo. Actually, I wanted to do such a tour in Queenstown already but somehow I didn’t have any time left down there (what a stress such a sabbatical can be… 😉 ). These boats are powered by a thrust of water, need very few water to float only and are extremely maneuverable. They are made to speed through river gorges – always as close as possible to the rocks so that your adrenalin rushes. Everything’s completely save of course although I had to sign one of those long questionnaires again and fill in detailed emergency contacts… A few pictures of the ride can be found in the Gallery.

Eine hatte ich noch auf meiner Liste: Das Tongariro Alpine Crossing ist eine Tageswanderung “durch spektakuläres und einzigartiges vulkanisches Terrain” (Zitat DoC) im Zentrum der Nordinsel. Auf meiner Reise in den Süden bin ich schon einmal hier durchgekommen und habe erfolglos mehrere Tage in Turangi auf besseres Wetter gewartet. Nach drei Tagen war damals das mitgebrachte Buch ausgelesen, meine Stimmung auf dem Tiefpunkt angekommen und ich unverrichteter Dinge weiter Richtung Süden gereist. Die Kiwis sagten mir damals, “wir wissen auch nicht was los ist, bisher hatten wir nur schönes Wetter aber jetzt…”.
Aber so schnell gebe ich nicht auf! “I’ll be back”, hatte ich damals gesagt und nun auf dem Rückweg Richtung Norden in Turangi noch einmal Halt gemacht, um das Crossing nachzuholen. Als Judgement Day war Mittwoch, der 24. April 2013 vorgesehen. Und was soll ich sagen? Naja, die Kiwis sagten jedenfalls: “Es tut uns leid, gestern hatten wir so schönes Wetter aber jetzt…”. Nichts wurde es also mit dem Crossing. Dafür sind wir dann im Tongariro Nationalpark in tieferen Lagen auf eine Wanderung zum Lower und Upper Tama gegangen und auch wenn wir nicht viel gesehen haben hat’s trotzdem Spass gemacht.

There was one left on my list: The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a day hike “across spectacular and unique volcanic terrain” (according to the DoC) in the heart of the North Island. On my way south I had stopped here and had been waiting for good weather without success for a few days. Back then, after three days and after having read the last page of my book, I had been quite a bit pi**** and had continued my journey on to the South Island without having done the Crossing. Back then the Kiwis told me, “we don’t know what’s going on, so far there has been only sunny weather but now…”.
But I don’t give in that fast! “I’ll be back”, I said and this week on my way back to Auckland I stopped again in Turangi to finally do the Crossing. Wednesday, April 24, 2013 was meant to be Judgment day. But what shall I tell you? The Kiwis at least told me “we are so sorry, yesterday the weather was so nice but now…” So I definitely had to forget about the Crossing. Instead we went on a day hike in lower areas of the Tongariro National Park, made it to the Lower and Upper Tama and had fun even though we didn’t see very much of the landscape.

Ich hab’ einen Kiwi gesehen!!! Der Kiwi ist bekanntlich der ‘Nationalvogel’ von Neuseeland, nachtaktiv und auf der Nord- und Südinsel schwierig in freier Wildbahn zu beobachten. Aber auf Stewart Island gibt’s noch geschätzte 20’000 davon und deshalb wollte ich unbedingt dorthin und einen fotografieren. Um meine Chancen zu erhöhen habe ich einen Konsumkredit aufgenommen, eine nächtliche Tour gebucht und mir vom örtlichen Guide versichern lassen, dass auf den letzen ca. 100 Touren immer mindestens ein Kiwi beobachtet wurde (“A 99% chance to spot a Kiwi”). Wir haben dann schliesslich drei Stück gesehen und konnten diese am Strand bei der Futtersuche minutenlang beobachten. Wie uns erklärt wurde, sollen es aufgrund des grösseren Schnabels weibliche Exemplare gewesen sein (was auch sonst… 😉 ) Allein für diese Fotos hat es sich gelohnt, die schwere Kamera und das grosse Zoom-Objektiv auf die Reise mitzuschleppen. Schaut Euch die Bilder an: Mit Canon 5D Mark II bei ISO 25’600 und Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 L IS USM Zoom im Dunkeln aus der Hand fotografiert – Orte wo Handy-Cameras nicht mehr hinkommen bzw. nur noch schwarz sehen… 🙂

I’ve seen a Kiwi!!! The Kiwi is the nocturnal ‘national bird’ of New Zealand and difficult to spot in the wild around the North and South Island. But on Stewart Island lives an estimated 20’000 of them and so I definitely wanted to go there and take a picture. To raise my chances of spotting one I asked for a consumer credit, booked an evening tour and trusted in a guide who told me that they had observed at least one Kiwi on each of their past hundred tours (“A 99% chance to spot a Kiwi”). In the end we spotted three of them and were able to observe them searching for food on the beach. We were told that those ones were females because of their larger beak (what else… 😉 ). Just for these few photos it was worth carrying my heavy camera and the large zoom lens during my whole journey. Have a look: Pictures have been taken with a Canon 5D Mark II at ISO 25’600 and a Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 L IS USM lens in complete darkness – places where fancy handy cams cannot go or simply capture blackness… 🙂

A short message from the famous Milford Sound: I’ve been there – me and x million other tourist this year. It’s beautiful and I’ve taken some pictures. That’s it – task completed.

Kurze Mitteilung vom berühmten Milford Sound: Ich war auch dort – genau so wie -zig Millionen andere Touris pro Jahr! Schön war er schon und ein paar Bilder habe ich auch gemacht. Das war’s, erledigt und abgehakt.

Der zweite Teil meiner Fahrt bis runter nach Queenstown war nicht minder schön als der erste, nördliche Teil. Wiederum habe ich hunderte von Photos geschossen und ein paar davon (naja, ziemlich viele…’tschuldigung) ‘müsst’ ihr euch jetzt anschauen. Besonders beeindruckt war ich von der Morgenstimmung am Lake Matheson – ich bin um 5:30 Uhr (!) aufgestanden und zum See rausgelaufen, nur um ein Bild von der Spiegelung des Mount Cook im Wasser zu photografieren. Und auch wenn das vermutlich schon 20 Millionen Touris vor mir gemacht haben, war es das Bild wert! Schaut euch auch die anderen Bildern an unter South Island – West Coast Southern Part.

The second part of my journey down to Queenstown was at least as beautiful as the first, northern part. Again I’ve taken hundreds of photos and a few of  them (ok, many…sorry) ‘must’ be admired by you now. I was especially impressed by the light at dawn around Lake Matheson – I got up at 5:30 (!) and walked down to the lake only to take a picture of Mt. Cook’s reflexion in the water. And it was worth it even though probably 20 million tourists have done the same before! Also have a look at the rest of the pictures in section South Island – West Coast Southern Part.
