Eine hatte ich noch auf meiner Liste: Das Tongariro Alpine Crossing ist eine Tageswanderung “durch spektakuläres und einzigartiges vulkanisches Terrain” (Zitat DoC) im Zentrum der Nordinsel. Auf meiner Reise in den Süden bin ich schon einmal hier durchgekommen und habe erfolglos mehrere Tage in Turangi auf besseres Wetter gewartet. Nach drei Tagen war damals das mitgebrachte Buch ausgelesen, meine Stimmung auf dem Tiefpunkt angekommen und ich unverrichteter Dinge weiter Richtung Süden gereist. Die Kiwis sagten mir damals, “wir wissen auch nicht was los ist, bisher hatten wir nur schönes Wetter aber jetzt…”.
Aber so schnell gebe ich nicht auf! “I’ll be back”, hatte ich damals gesagt und nun auf dem Rückweg Richtung Norden in Turangi noch einmal Halt gemacht, um das Crossing nachzuholen. Als Judgement Day war Mittwoch, der 24. April 2013 vorgesehen. Und was soll ich sagen? Naja, die Kiwis sagten jedenfalls: “Es tut uns leid, gestern hatten wir so schönes Wetter aber jetzt…”. Nichts wurde es also mit dem Crossing. Dafür sind wir dann im Tongariro Nationalpark in tieferen Lagen auf eine Wanderung zum Lower und Upper Tama gegangen und auch wenn wir nicht viel gesehen haben hat’s trotzdem Spass gemacht.

There was one left on my list: The Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a day hike “across spectacular and unique volcanic terrain” (according to the DoC) in the heart of the North Island. On my way south I had stopped here and had been waiting for good weather without success for a few days. Back then, after three days and after having read the last page of my book, I had been quite a bit pi**** and had continued my journey on to the South Island without having done the Crossing. Back then the Kiwis told me, “we don’t know what’s going on, so far there has been only sunny weather but now…”.
But I don’t give in that fast! “I’ll be back”, I said and this week on my way back to Auckland I stopped again in Turangi to finally do the Crossing. Wednesday, April 24, 2013 was meant to be Judgment day. But what shall I tell you? The Kiwis at least told me “we are so sorry, yesterday the weather was so nice but now…” So I definitely had to forget about the Crossing. Instead we went on a day hike in lower areas of the Tongariro National Park, made it to the Lower and Upper Tama and had fun even though we didn’t see very much of the landscape.
