Ich hab’ einen Kiwi gesehen!!! Der Kiwi ist bekanntlich der ‘Nationalvogel’ von Neuseeland, nachtaktiv und auf der Nord- und Südinsel schwierig in freier Wildbahn zu beobachten. Aber auf Stewart Island gibt’s noch geschätzte 20’000 davon und deshalb wollte ich unbedingt dorthin und einen fotografieren. Um meine Chancen zu erhöhen habe ich einen Konsumkredit aufgenommen, eine nächtliche Tour gebucht und mir vom örtlichen Guide versichern lassen, dass auf den letzen ca. 100 Touren immer mindestens ein Kiwi beobachtet wurde (“A 99% chance to spot a Kiwi”). Wir haben dann schliesslich drei Stück gesehen und konnten diese am Strand bei der Futtersuche minutenlang beobachten. Wie uns erklärt wurde, sollen es aufgrund des grösseren Schnabels weibliche Exemplare gewesen sein (was auch sonst… 😉 ) Allein für diese Fotos hat es sich gelohnt, die schwere Kamera und das grosse Zoom-Objektiv auf die Reise mitzuschleppen. I’ve seen a Kiwi!!! The Kiwi is the nocturnal ‘national bird’ of New Zealand and difficult to spot in the wild around the North and South Island. But on Stewart Island lives an estimated 20’000 of them and so I definitely wanted to go there and take a picture. To raise my chances of spotting one I asked for a consumer credit, booked an evening tour and trusted in a guide who told me that they had observed at least one Kiwi on each of their past hundred tours (“A 99% chance to spot a Kiwi”). In the end we spotted three of them and were able to observe them searching for food on the beach. We were told that those ones were females because of their larger beak (what else… 😉 ). Just for these few photos it was worth carrying my heavy camera and the large zoom lens during my whole journey.
