Neben den Kiwis gab es noch einen zweiten Grund für mich nach Stewart Island zu reisen: Nur 402 Einwohner auf 1’746 Kilometern im Quadrat (Wikipedia)! Ideale Vorraussetzungen für meinen nächsten Great Walk durch eine menschenleere Natur. Der Rakiura Track ist eine 32 km Rundwanderung durch dicht bewaldetes Gebiet und durch teilweise knietiefen Schlamm. “That’s part of the fun” wie mir von den Locals lachend erklärt wurde… Im Sommer ist der Track angeblich rege frequentiert aber um diese Jahreszeit hat es fast keine Wanderer mehr auf der Route: Ich habe während der zwei Tage eine (!) Person getroffen. Die Wanderung ist eigentlich recht einfach aber schlängelt sich durch dichten Regenwald und so verliert man relativ schnell die Orientierung. Nach etwa 2 Stunden habe ich nicht mehr gewusst in welche Himmelsrichtung ich marschiere und musste mich allein auf die orangen Wegmarkierungen an den Bäumen verlassen (Danke DoC…). Nach einer weiteren Stunde hatte ich dann langsam genug vom Schlamm, in dem ich immer wieder steckengeblieben bin. Und auf der North Arm Hütte, wo ich schliesslich übernachtet habe, gab’s neben meinem 5000 Watt Scheinwerfer (siehe Blog Eintrag “Felices Fiestas – Abschalten auf der Estancia” vom Dezember) kein Licht und ich musste zuerst mal neues Brennholz hacken, um ein Feuer anzumachen und meine verschlammten Sachen zu trocknen. Aber hey: That’s part of the fun, isn’t it? Genau! Mir hat’s jedenfalls gefallen 🙂

Besides the Kiwis there was a second reason for me to head over to Stewart Island: Only 402 inhabitants within 1’746 square kilometers (Wikipedia)! Perfect conditions for my next Great Walk in a deserted area. The Rakiura Track is a 32 km loop through densely wooded area and sometimes across knee deep mud. “That’s part of the fun” as locals explained to me laughing… In summer the track is visited briskly but at this time of the year there are almost no hikers around: I’ve seen one (!) person in two days. The track is fairly easy but meanders through thick forest and so you loose your compass relatively soon. After about two hours I didn’t know anymore in which direction I was heading and had to rely on the orange markers at the trees (many thanks to the DoC…). After another hour or so I was fed up with all the mud in which I got stuck all the time. And finally, after having reached the North Arm Hut, there was no light beside my 5000 watts head lamp (see post “Felices Fiestas – Abschalten auf der Estancia” of Dezember) and I had to chop wood and start a fire to dry my muddy clothes first. But hey: that’s part of the fun, isn’t it? Exactly! And I enjoyed the trip after all 🙂
