Because Inbal and me had a lot of fun during the 5 days on the W-Trail in Torres del Paine National Park we wanted to do another multi-day hike in the Fitz Roy Area now and go out into the woods with our tents and food for a couple of days again. It’s just a lot more fun to camp in the evenings than to return to the starting point every day on the same trail. Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre are some of the most famous peaks in South America among mountaineers and climbers. Even my Lowe-backpack has got the name ‘Cerro Torre’ so I definitely wanted to check out this hill. And Cerro Fitz Roy is famous for unpredictable weather conditions – rarely you can see this peak not covered by clouds and climbers wait at the bottom of the mountain for days to get weather conditions good enough to climb to the top.
For this trekking we combined a few single day hikes to one tree-day tour and started from our base in El Chaltén to the Cerro Fitz Roy where we stayed at the Poincenot camp site (day 1). The following day we did our mandatory sunrise hike up to the bottom of Cerro Fitz Roy (which was even more stunning than the one we did in Torres del Paine as far as I’m concerned) and afterwards we hiked with our heavy backpacks to Lago Torre and the Di Agostini camp site with good views of the Cerro Torre (day 2). On day 3 we hiked up to Glacier Grande all along the border moraine first having really, really stormy weather conditions and finally with the backpacks back to El Chaltén. Once again it was a fantastic hike and besides the rain on the evening of the second day the weather was just perfect for hiking – and we saw the Fitz without any clouds on a bright and sunny day! I really enjoyed the two trekkings with Inbal in Torres del Paine and the Fitz Roy area. Hey, and in the end we were almost going faster than the durations indicated on the trail map – if just there weren’t so many uphill sections, right? 😉 😉 😉 Looking forward to watch the movie of our treks!
Nachdem Inbal und ich während der 5 Tage auf dem W-Trail im Torres del Paine Nationalpark eine Menge Spass hatten, wollten wir nun in der Fitz Roy Gegend etwas ähnliches unternehmen und wieder für ein paar Tage mit Zelt und Proviant raus in die Natur. Es macht einfach mehr Spass, abends draussen zu campieren als auf Eintageswanderungen immer wieder den gleichen Weg zurück zum Ausgangspunkt zu marschieren. Cerro Fitz Roy und Cerro Torre sind mit die berühmtesten beiden Gipfel für Bergsteiger hier in Südamerika (Stimmt’s Sala?). Mein Lowe-Rucksack ist nach dem Cerro Torre benannt und so wollte ich den Hügel mal von nahe begutachten. Und der Cerro Fitz Roy ist bekannt für die unberechenbaren Wetterwechsel – selten genug sieht man den Gipfel ohne Wolken und Bergsteiger warten hier tagelang am Fuss des Berges auf gute Wetterbedingungen für eine Besteigung.
Für das Trekking haben wir einzelne Tageswanderungen zu einem 3 Tagestrip kombiniert und sind von der Basis in El Chaltén aus zum Cerro Fitz Roy gewandert mit Übernachtung im Poincenot Camping (Tag 1). Am nächsten Tag folgte die obligatorische Sonnenaufgangswandeurng hinauf zum Fuss des Cerro Fitz Roy (noch atemberaubender als derjenige im Torres del Paine) und danach mit Gepäck zum Lago Torre bzw. Camping Di Agostini mit Sicht auf den Cerro Torre (Tag 2). Am dritten Tag ging’s dann unter stürmischen Wetterbedingungen die Seitenmoräne rauf zum Anfang des Glacier Grande am Fuss des Cerro Torre und schliesslich mit dem ganzen Gepäck zurück nach El Chaltén. Wiederum war es eine superschöne Wanderung und bis auf den Regen am Abend des zweiten Tages hatten wir auch wieder perfektes Wetter zum Wandern – und wir haben den Fitz ohne Wolken gesehen!
